WOOTEN FAMILIES
OF
SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
Plus HARDY, TREADWELL, BOOTH and MINOR

Charlotte M. WOOTEN and Dr. John Campbell HENRY were married August 4, 1846 in Columbus County, North Carolina. They were my second great-grandparents.

After a great deal of searching in 1997, 1998 and early 1999, I pieced together my ancestral HENRY line back to Scotland. Finding the parents of Charlotte WOOTEN proved equally difficult, but after much searching, I finally found a book of abtracts of wills proved by the Courts in Bladen County, NC between 1734 and 1900 which contained one written by Shadrack Wooten, Jr. This will provided the key that he was the father of my Charlotte M. Wooten.

Information that I have found on the Internet suggests that my Wooten line extends back to sixteenth century England and very likely much earlier. For now, however, I choose to limit my display of information on this page to that for which I have found reasonable and satisfactory proof. In time, I most likely will extend it to earlier generations.

Like many surnames in early North America, the WOOTEN name has resulted from a variety of spellings. On this page, you will see it spelled WATTON, WOTTON, and WOOTEN. Terri Brown, APG, reports that one clerk recorded the name as WOOTERS and in the 1800 census as HOTTEN.

WOOTEN of Colonial Virginia

Thomas WATTON was born in September 1612 in Castor, Northamptonshire, England. I have not yet found the name of the ship he took to North America and exactly when he arrived in Virginia. It is quite likely that he was the Thomas Watton, one of 12 named immigrants whose passage from England to Virginia was paid in 1639 by a VA planter named John Pawley. Records reveal that Thomas married a Sarah JENNINGS in Isle of Wight, VA shortly after 1646. Sarah was the widow of Arthur WOOD. Thomas and Sarah Jennings WATTON had the following son:

  • Richard WOTTON, b abt 1650 Isle of Wight, VA, d 1687 Isle or Wight, VA, m aft Dec 1670, Isle of Wight, Joyce Albridgton, b abt 1654, d aft 1687, Isle of Wight. Their issue:

Descendants of Charlotte M. Wooten
(Shadrach, Jr.,6Shadrach,5John,4Richard II,3 Richard I,2Thomas1)

The 1850 census for Bladen County, Cape Fear South West Side, lists John C. Henry, 29, physician, living with Charlotte, age 22, Edwin G., age 2, and Henrietta W., age 9/12.

Shortly after the 1850 census was taken, the Henry family moved to Florida where a third child--my great-grandmother--was born June 27, 1851. We find that the family is listed in the Florida census for 1860 and we know that Charlotte and her family returned to live in Brunswick County, NC in 1862. There, Dr. Henry practiced medicine and he and Charlotte raised their children. Click here to view details of Charlotte and John Campbell Henry's family.

Ancestors of Elizabeth Treadwell

Many of the following families in my ancestral tree were among the earliest to arrive in the American Colonies from England. Records show TREADWELL, MINOR, BOOTH, HAWLEY and PALMER families settling in Connecticut before 1640. Most, if not all, of these early settlers came down from English settlements in nearby Massachusetts. Noteworthy among these CT settlers is my eighth great-grandfather, John MINOR, who was born 30 Aug 1635 in Charlestown, MA. He may have the distinction of being my earliest recorded ancestor to be born in America. John's wife, Elizabeth BOOTH, was born in 1641 in Stratfield, CT, giving her early status as well. Here follows information on a number of ancestral families of Elizabeth TREADWELL who married Shadrach WOOTEN:

John TREADWELL, b 11 Feb 1674/75 Fairfield, CT, d 1716 Stratfield, CT; m 8 Feb 1698/99 Woodbury, CT Abigail MINOR, dau of John MINOR and Elizabeth BOOTH. Their issue:

  • Adoniram TREADWELL, b 14 Jan 1700/01 Stratfield, CT, d 1782 Duplin Co., NC; m 1725 CT Beulah GREGORY, dau of Samuel GREGORY and Mary SULLIVEN. Their issue:

    • John TREADWELL, Sr., b 1735 Stratfield, CT, d 24 Nov 1819 Sampson Co., NC; m Sarah HERRING, b 1735 Bertie Precinct, NC, dau of John HERRING, Jr. and Rebecca LOFTIN. John TREADWELL, Sr., served as a Major, NC Militia, during the Revolutionary War and is listed among those in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge.  Issue of John and Sarah TREADWELL:

      1. Mary TREADWELL, b 1759 Duplin Co., m 1806 Shadrach WOOTEN, b abt 1755, d 12 Apr 1812 (his 2nd wife)

Ancestry of John Minor & His Wife Elizabeth Booth,
Third Great-grandparents of Elizabeth Treadwell

Richard BOOTH, son of Edward & Marsia BOOTH/BOTHE, was born 1607 in Cheshire England and died after 1688 in Stratfield, CT. In 1640, he married in Stratfield Elizabeth HAWLEY, born 1607, Parwich, Derby, England, the daughter of Joseph & Katherine Booth HAWLEY. This 1640 marriage of Richard BOOTH and Elizabeth HAWLEY is the earliest recorded marriage in America of my ancestry presently known to me. Among their issue was a daughter.

  • Elizabeth BOOTH, b 10 Sep 1641 Stratford, CT; d 24 Oct 1762 Woodbury, Litchfield Co., CT; she married John MINOR, b 30 Aug 1635 Charlestown, MA, d 17 Sep 1719, Woodbury, CT, son of Thomas and Grace Palmer MINOR, both of Somersetshire England and both of whom died in 1690 in Stonington, CT. John & Elizabeth Booth MINOR had a daughter Abigail who married John TREADWELL.
