HOWARD FAMILIES
OF
EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA

My knowledge of my most distant HOWARD ancestor begins with Thomas HOWARD who was born between 1709 and 1732. I believe him to be the Thomas HOWARD who purchased land in 1753 in an area of Craven County, North Carolina that eventually became Wayne County in 1779. My grandfather, Claudius Cooper HOWARD, strongly believed that this Thomas was born in Wales and that he had a brother, Isaiah, who never married. My searching for proof to confirm his beliefs has tended to increase my confusion as to the birthplace of this Thomas. Sometime ago I learned of information that suggests to me that this Thomas might have been the son of another Thomas HOWARD who reportedly married Elizabeth BROUGH, daughter of Coleman BROUGH and his wife, Elinor CORPREW, daughter of John CORPREW of Elizabeth City County, VA. Coleman BROUGH died in Virginia sometime before 1702. This possible connection is very speculative. Claudius Cooper Howard & Berta Robena Herring, c 1905

It is quite possible that both Thomas HOWARD, Sr., and Thomas HOWARD, Jr., were born in Wales and came to Virginia; however, I have yet to find immigration records reflecting as much. So for now, I will set forth descendants of the Thomas HOWARD who lived in Wayne County and died there sometime after 1790.

Thomas Howard and Descendants

Thomas HOWARD reportedly was born in Wales, though I have yet to find some proof of that. He and his wife (name unknown) lived in Wayne County and had at least one son, Minson, which is confirmed by a 1790 witnessed transfer of "... property, a gift from Thomas Howard of Wayne Co. to his son, Minson Brough Howard of Sampson Co." Circumstantial evidence found in my research suggests to me that two other sons were siblings of Minson and I have listed them here. Hopefully, confirmation of this relationship will be forthcoming. Thomas died in Wayne County between 1790 and 1800. The following is the issue of Thomas and his wife:
